10 things NOT to do when Celebrating Gay Pride

What Not to Do during Gay Pride

For the LGBTQ community worldwide, Pride means celebration, support, protest, and togetherness.

It is a powerful celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people.

We’re here to help you celebrate and support equality and diversity during Pride. Just follow our list of 10 things NOT to do when celebrating Gay Pride!

1. Don’t overdo it

Pride may be all about celebration, but it’s important to know your limits. If you’re drinking or taking drugs, make sure you know what you’re taking, where you got it, and know what your limits are. You don’t want to end up feeling sick or anxious in the middle of a big crowd.

2. Don’t have unprotected sex

Especially when you’re out in a celebration mode all day, you might be more uninhibited than otherwise. We all know the feeling of getting swept away in the heat of the moment. Partying, drinking, and doing drugs can impair your judgment. But don’t let hedonism and passion get the better of you!

Always be responsible to yourself and others and have safe sex. This includes being aware of what constitutes safe sex. Wearing two condoms or “double bagging it” is not a thing! It actually works counterproductively, since it increases the chances of the condoms ripping.

3. Don’t force yourself on others

No matter how drunk or happy you are, never force yourself on others. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable being intimate with you, or even talking to you, just walk away. Leave them alone. Everyone has a right to enjoy Pride in their own way, without being harassed.

4. Don’t feel pressure to do something you don’t want to do

Stand up to peer pressure. If people are pressuring you into doing something you don’t feel like doing, be strong and stand up for yourself. You’re better off celebrating Pride on your own terms than following a group and feeling uncomfortable.

5. Don’t drink and drive

Never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or taking other substances. Even if you live nearby or you don’t feel like you’re under the influence. Just leave your car and pick it up the next day. Your safety and the safety of others comes first.

6. Don’t lose sight of your friends

Pride can be a crowded, hectic day. It’s a good idea to stick with your group of friends so that you can look out for each other. Be with people you trust, and if you do split up, always arrange for a meeting point, or keep in touch through messages to let each other know that you’re ok.

7. Don’t get caught up in drama

Let’s be honest, there will be a lot of drunk people, so there will inevitably be a lot of drama! But don’t let that ruin your fun. Don’t let yourself get sucked into other people’s drama. If you realize they’re trying to drag you into it, just don’t engage and walk away.

8. Don’t forget to hydrate and eat

It’s going to be a long day with a lot of walking and dancing. You probably won’t go easy on the drinks, either. You’ll need fuel to make it through all this in one piece! Always carry a water bottle with you to stay hydrated. And remember to eat enough so you’ll have the energy to last until the early hours.

9. Don’t disrespect others

Pride is a celebration of diversity. It offers a safe space for LGBTQ people to stand together and fight for equality and human rights. If you have trouble accepting this, stay at home. No matter how different you are, respect others. Don’t bring your negativity to Pride. Pride is a positive celebration.
There are also many heteros and minors attending pride parades. Don't make the mistake of assuming people's sexuality or age.

10. Don’t fall into the canal!

Anyone who has ever experienced Amsterdam Canal Pride will know what we’re talking about! No matter how crazy things get on your boat in the beautiful Amsterdam canals, find something (or someone!) to grab hold of so you don’t fall into the canal! Also, remember to never climb any of the houseboats. Those are people's actual domiciles. They live there. Respect their roofs and verandas.

Pride is a special day. It’s not just a celebration, but also a protest against inequality, and a space for the LGBTQ community to stand together. If you stick to these 10 tips, you’re bound to have a fantastic Gay Pride celebration!
