Summer Loving: 10 Tips for a Hot Holiday Romance

Tips for a Hot Holiday Romance

Summer is well and truly upon us, and we turn our attention to our long-awaited vacation. It’s taken ages to get here, but now it’s finally here, we get to enjoy it! Time to kick back, let our hair down and party like it’s our last night on earth. If you’re jetting off to foreign climes, you may have love on your mind – after all, the perfect ingredients for a hot holiday romance are sun, sand, sea, and s …. sangria!

Take a look at our 10 top tips, to make sure your summer loving is hot in every way, and not a disappointing damp squib!

1. Be prepared

It’s not rocket science. You’ve booked a holiday, you know you’re going to be spending time half-naked by a pool or in skimpy going out clothes, don’t leave everything until the last minute. Get yourself prepared well in advance and have no regrets about those hairy toes or the extra few pounds you’re carrying. Get waxed, get fit and get your funk on. You want this to be a holiday to remember, right? So get yourself beach ready in plenty of time, and enjoy not having to worry about if your bum looks big in that swimwear!

2. If I could offer you one piece of advice, sunscreen would be it

Sorry to go all Baz Luhrmann on you, but seriously, don’t think you’re being clever by skipping the sunscreen in favor of an all over tan. Lobsters aren’t sexy, and safe holiday sex isn’t fun when you’re wincing in pain from every touch of your lover. Pick a suitable factor for your skin type; re-apply when necessary, and you’ll still be able to get a golden tan, without the scary red burns. You’ll thank me for this piece of advice!

3. Go easy on the alcohol

I’m not suggesting for one minute that you should abstain from fluorescent fishbowls or colorful cocktails, but make sure you drink within your limits. It’s easy to get carried away with the cheap booze flowing, but getting too drunk isn’t a good idea. With beer goggles firmly in place, are you likely to make some bad romance decisions? Yes, you are! You need to be able to tell if the person whose tongue is halfway down your throat, will still be as appealing in the cold light of day when you’re hungover. You’ve been warned.

4. Beware the locals

That sounds harsh, I know, but the locals are there all the time, seeing an endless conveyor belt of tourists pass through. If Misty the barmaid tells you that nothing shines as brightly as your mesmerizing eyes, or if Paulo the waiter tells you-you're the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world, chances are they’ve said it before, to a million other potential sex buddies. That’s ok if you’re cool with that, but don’t just fall for their cheesy chat-up lines.

5. Make the most of your holiday

Seems obvious I guess, but it’s easy to spend too much time sitting idly watching the object of your unrequited desire, and letting the days pass by unloved. Holiday romances are awesome, but they can’t be forced. If it’s not meant to be, move on and enjoy yourself. It doesn’t have to happen for you to make the best of your well-deserved break. Make fun the focus, not romance.

6. Embrace the whirlwind

Holiday romances tend to be jam-packed, with a lot going on in a short space of time. You can’t expect to meet someone and begin some sort of relationship in the same way you would back at home. I’m not saying you should jump into bed with the first person you meet, as soon as the tires touch the tarmac, but you do need to be prepared for things to move much quicker than you might be used to. Embrace it! You don’t want to regret not fitting in as many sexy fun times as possible before you have to say goodbye. *Wails*

7. Be realistic about the future

You’re in love! You want to marry and have lots of babies, a semi-detached house with a large garden for all the parties you’ll host and a Labrador called Henry. WHOA! Hold your horses, you’re getting carried away. It’s likely that even if you hail from the same country, you’ll be from very different parts of it. Compromises will have to be made; someone, or maybe even both of you, will have to up-sticks and relocate. Jobs, families, and friends will all have to be considered… it’s unlikely that you can just come home, back to reality and pick up where you left off. Maybe it’s just best left as a holiday fling?

8. Try something, or rather, someone new

Do you have a set type of person you go for? Well, I’m going to assume that since you’re holidaying as a singleton, your ‘type’ hasn’t really worked out for you before! Take the opportunity to try something different! You never know, you might end up finding the kind of person that really floats your love boat, somewhere where you least expected it. Opposites attract, and all that jazz.

9. Don’t invest too much of the real you

Yeah, I know it’s easier said than done but try to maintain a cool exterior and not get too carried away with divulging your whole life story to a virtual stranger. You’re likely to not see them again, they don’t need to know where you live and work, which school you went to, or the name of your favorite bakery, that you sometimes pop in to on the way back from work. I hope you never find yourself in bed with a stalker, but all of this info can be used to easily track you down, and you might not want to be found. Be selective over the information you give, and stay in control of what they know about you.

10. If you like it, and even if you don’t, put a condom on it!

The most important of them all and the easiest to convey… always practice safe sex!
