Green is arguably one of the biggest buzzwords right now, from eco-friendly buildings to toiletries, to the way we eat. Can you green your sex life? Absolutely.
If you want to control the environmental impact your sex life makes, we need to look at a few different angles. First, contraception. Condoms are great because they prevent the spread of STIs, and when used properly, are 99% effective against unwanted pregnancy. However, condoms have to be thrown away (never flushed!). Luckily, there are a few companies out there looking out for both your health and the environment. GLYDE brand condoms are ethical, vegan, fair trade, and biodegrade very easily because of their natural composition. French Letter is another great option for vegan, eco-friendly condoms, but maybe a bit more difficult to find.
Green your lube!
What else do we need for great sex? Well, a quality lubricant always helps! You have a few great options when it comes to eco-friendly slippery stuff. If you’re not using condoms, you can use pure, organic coconut oil. Coconut oil is completely safe for the vagina, and can even help prevent yeast infections. Wrappin’ it before you tap it? No problem. Try a natural lubricant that’s paraben-free, glycerin-free, and water-based, like Sliquid, Yes, or Good Clean Love.

We have to talk about eco-friendly toys. What makes a sex toy eco-friendly is similar to what makes other electronics eco-friendly. Look for reusable batteries, as these will produce less waste in the long run (and they’re a lot more convenient than realizing you’ve run out of AAs!). Materials like glass and steel are wonderfully environmentally friendly because they’re made to last a lifetime, and can be recycled after a thorough cleaning if you decide you no longer want them. Silicone is similar in that a premium formulation is built to last, but they’re a bit harder to dispose of safely. They are, however, 100% sterilizable, which extends the life of the adult toy. Think about it this way: Investing in a few quality toys makes less of an environmental impact than buying 10+ cheaper toys that you have to replace constantly.
