Sexual Practices Around the World
Lithuanians and Letts do it. The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it. Even lazy jellyfish do it.
Of course, Cole Porter was, supposedly, talking about falling in love (yeah, right). Seriously though, if there’s one activity that is practiced all around the world, it’s sex. Obviously, since it’s kind of important for procreation.
Nevertheless, throughout different countries and different cultures in the world, a variety of sex rituals, sex traditions, and sex practices has evolved. Let’s take a look at 10 of the most interesting sexual practices around the world.
1. MASTURBATION CEREMONIES IN ANCIENT EGYPT
Yup, the Egyptians did ‘masturbation month’ before it was even a thing. They believed masturbation was a sacred source of life. During a special ceremony, men would masturbate into the Nile to make the river ‘fertile’. This was seen as a good omen.
2. KEEPING YOUR PANTS ON DURING SEX IN INIS BEAG
Inis Beag is a small, isolated community on an island just off the coast of Ireland. They’re strictly Catholic and, hence, quite prudish.
On Inis Beag, the female orgasm is a thing of myth. Just like foreplay and any sex position other than missionary.
Sexual practices on this pious island are mostly practical. Some even keep their underpants on during the deed. Well, at least that way you won’t get cold.
3. KILLER DANCE MOVES WILL GET A WOMAN LAID IN COLOMBIA
In the Guajiro tribe in Colombia, a dance ritual is performed by the women of the tribe. If she can successfully complete this complicated dance, she may have sex with one of the men. Goes to show that killing it on the dancefloor is always a good thing.
4. DRINKING SEMEN TO BECOME A MAN IN THE SAMBIAN TRIBE
Transitioning from a young boy into a man is never an easy thing.
But the boys in the Sambian tribe probably have the world’s most intense coming-of-age ritual.
It usually takes many years and involves multiple, painful, rituals. One of these rituals is consuming the semen of the strongest warriors of the tribe.
Sambian people believe that this semen contains a masculine spirit, which will be transferred to the boys who drink it. Bottoms up!
5. PARIS: CITY OF THE HORNY
Ah, Paris: the city of love! And apparently, also the city of the horny!
A recent study has shown that Parisians have quite an active sex life. As it turns out, almost a quarter of them partakes in orgies and a third in threesomes.
Also, 44% of Parisians claims to have had sex in public and a whopping 58% admits they have cheated on their significant other. The average number of sexual partners for Parisians is at a young age, 19.
These numbers are all a lot higher than for people in other parts of France. And the world, for that matter. Ooh la la!
6. THE GREAT RITE PAGAN SEX RITUAL
Paganism and Wiccanism are religions most commonly practiced in the UK and USA, but Wiccans can also be found in other places of the world. One of their most famous sex rituals is ‘The Great Rite’ on May 1st. This is described as a symbolic sexual union of the Goddess and the God. It’s usually performed by the High Priestess and High Priest to draw energy from the powerful connection between men and women.
7. THE ISLAM TEMPORARY MARRIAGE
As with many religions, in strict Islamic communities, there are a lot of rules and restrictions around having sex. But there appears to be a loophole: the temporary marriage.
A young couple that would like to have sex but not get married right away, can request this kind of union. If they pay for the ceremony and get their parents’ approval, it’s okay to have sex without breaking Islamic law. Once your marriage contract comes to an end, you’re free to move on. Bye, bae!
8. ANCIENT SEX MANUALS CARVED IN STONE IN INDIA
Everyone who’s ever read a Cosmopolitan has heard of the term ‘Kamasutra’. But in reality, Kamasutra is about more than just a guide to kinky sex positions. It’s an age-old work that deals with all aspect of a relationship.
In the ancient Khajuraho Temples, you can admire carvings of couples enjoying sex all sorts of ways. Researchers believe the temples were partly built as a form of instruction. Way to go, sex ed!
