What Can I use as Lube? 9 Ideas for Homemade Lube

What can I use as lube: 9 Ideas for homemade lube

To the average person, all lube seems pretty much the same, right? You go to the pharmacy, or maybe the grocery store, and head to the “family planning” aisle. They might have some different brands. But what to decide? First the importance off lube, here are all kinds of reasons you might need lube.

What is important, is what kind of sexpartner you are going to have? A vagina asks for other stuff then anal sex. And, of course, a little extra moisture can just feel great and can keep things going, long past when your natural moisture might start to wane. In short, there’s no shame in the lubrication game.

Different kind of lube

Do you want to be safe? Always go with a water-based lubricant. It can be used during penis-in-vagina sex and/or with all sex toys and safe sex barriers (condoms, dental dams, gloves). You are always right. There are also special brands that are good for a woman's skin. Like PinkWater for example.

Silicone lubricant sits atop the surface of the skin, providing a thin but ultra-slick barrier. It doesn’t reduce sensation, but it does reduce friction. When it comes to silicone lube, you can find some decent picks in the drugstore. You may have heard before that oil-based lube is bad, full stop. That’s not necessarily true – only some oil based lubes are bad for some things. Where oil-based lubes really shine, though, is during anal play. Because the anus has no natural lubrication, if you use water-based lube, you may find yourself re-applying constantly. And that can really ruin the mood.

Homemade lube suggestions

We’ve all been there. You’re just about to get it on. Either with your man or with your sex toy (we don’t judge).

The heat is on! You’re breathing fast and shallow. You want it. Now!

Rapidly, you reach for your nightstand. Your hand fumbling around to quickly grab your trusty jar of good ol’ lube. But what’s this? Only a few pathetic drops of precious lube squirt out.

“What can I use as lube?” you start to wonder, slightly panicked. If only you had some stuff lying around the house that could do the trick. Well, as a matter of fact, you probably do.

Check out these 9 household items or suggestions for homemade lube. You’ll never suffer a dry spell again.

BEFORE YOU GET STARTED
As a general rule of thumb when about to apply something on your genitals: be freaking careful! Your vagina is a precious and delicate part of your body, so don’t just put anything up in there without thought. Know that anything that has any form of sugar in it might trigger a yeast infection. Remember that it is always better to buy actual lube instead.

STAY AWAY FROM THE SWEET STUFF

A big no-no when it comes to household lubes is anything containing sugar since this can and will cause nasty yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis. So go right ahead and scratch off honey, peanut butter or Nutella off your list.

OILS AND LATEX: NOT A HAPPY COUPLE

A few of the homemade lube suggestions below will contain oil. Oil-based lubes are perfectly alright for using on a glass, rock, wooden or metal sex toys or with plenty of other forms of masturbation.

But don’t use oil based lubricants when you’re about to have intercourse with a condom. Also, refrain from using essential oils with silicone (coated) toys.

For the oil will wear down a latex condom. It will destroy your silicone toys. Always use water based lube or silicone based lube with silicone sex toys.

Now: let’s lube ‘er up!

1. COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil seems to be all the rage these days. Health junkies use it on their hair, in their breakfast and now you can use it on your vajayjay! You can also use olive oil, avocado oil or almond oil. Just make sure you only use oil-based lubes when you’re in a monogamous relationship and on some form of birth control other than condoms since a condom won’t survive these kinds of lubes.

2. ALOE VERA

You probably have a bottle of this stuff lying around the bathroom to put on your skin in case of mad sunburn. Aloe Vera gel is often an ingredient in store-bought lubes, so it’s perfectly suited to do the job! Don’t use the bright green kind, though. Stick to the pure aloe vera, the transparent kind.

3. EGG WHITES

Now this one might sound weird or gross to you. But egg whites are actually a completely safe alternative for lube. There’s no risk of salmonella. Some homeopathic enthusiasts even believe that using this natural product as a lube can help if you and your partner are trying to conceive.

An extra bonus: after a job well done, you can make yourself a nice protein-rich omelet! Bon Appetit!

4. CORNSTARCH

This is one of those things everyone has lying around in their kitchen cabinets. To cook up your own homemade lube, mix 1 cup of water with 4 teaspoons of cornstarch.

Slowly bring it to a boil in a pan on low to medium heat. Give it a good stir for about 30 seconds. Let your mixture cool off and you’re ready to rock!

5. CRISCO

Have you ever heard of a household product as versatile as Crisco? Nope, neither have we. And it turns out, it’s pretty nifty in the bedroom as well.

This product is especially suitable for anal uses. Since Crisco is so heavy and almost has a jelly-like texture, it will stick where you put it. And stay there.

The downside is that it’s hard to remove. So probably not your first choice when it comes to vaginal sex or masturbation. But if you’re more of a backdoor kind of girl, this is your lube!

6. PLAIN YOGHURT

Not just a great snack, also great for between your crack! You should definitely make sure the yogurt has absolutely no sugar in it since sugar (as we know) can cause nasty yeast infections.

The yogurt itself is perfectly safe to use as lube, though. It might even be beneficial as the lactobacillus cultures can help balance the internal pH of your vagina. These babies also create a more hospitable environment for healthy bacteria.

7. BODY OIL

Oil for your scalp, shower time or dry skin are all suitable as lube. Make sure the amount of fragrance in these oils is minimal. And again, since it’s an oil-based lube, it won’t be compatible with condoms or silicone toys.

8. SENSITIVE SKIN LOTION

When it comes to body parts, they don’t get a lot more sensitive than your vagina. So sensitive skin lotion is perfectly okay to use as lube. As with the body oil, the less fragrance that is added to the product, the better.

9. SPIT

When all else fails, there’s always the natural lubricant, spit. Though the idea to use spit might gross you out, it’s actually a perfectly okay substitute for lube.

It’s free and you have a pretty much-unlimited amount of it. Make sure you didn't just finish a bowl of Doritos or a royal helping of jalapenos. Apply common sense and proper hygiene.

Although saliva can be used for vaginal sex and masturbation, it’s not the best for anal sex. So time to get your inner porn star on and spit’r up!
