Sometimes it’s tough to be a woman, even in the modern world. For instance, one need only look at the Olympics coverage before wanting to facepalm with all the perfection of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
Thankfully there is always hope and it comes in the form of women: Strong powerful women that are supporting each other and evoking boundless streams of appreciation among women…perhaps even a little girl crush?
Used as a term to describe an intense degree of admiration between two women, girl crushes are a fantastic form of female empowerment. There’s just something so inherently kick ass and, dare I say, sexy about one woman building another up.
So, without further ado, It’s time to celebrate Women Crush Wednesday!
Here’s my list of seven starlets that I’m currently crushing on hard, and why you probably should be too.
On the screen, Maisie Williams has wowed many of us with her intense and captivating depiction of the young Arya Stark. The ferocity that Maisie brings to this complex and engaging female character is commendable enough, but Maisie is also a very accomplished woman in her own right.
This is perfectly in keeping with Maisie’s no-nonsense attitude when it comes to women finding their own voice. Speaking to the Telegraph in April Maisie declared that: “I’ve always wanted to take control. Every girl should feel like that – that they can take control of their future”
Rock on Maisie.
Yet another “GoT” powerhouse for the list. On-screen, Sophie Turner perfectly balances out the unbridled passion of her sister Arya Stark.
Undertaking a powerful transformation from an innocent young girl to a strong and elegant lady who understands that sometimes a person’s power is in their social graces Sansa Stark has long been a fan favorite.
When the show came under fire for its depiction of women, Sophie wasn’t afraid to come forward and defend the show as being inherently feminist, arguing that to avoid the difficult things that happened to women historically would be disingenuous.
Oh, and she also adopted the dog that played her dire wolf companion. Amazing.
My heart will always have a personal soft spot for Ellen Page.
Known for her powerful performances in films such as Hard Candy and the Academy Award-winning movie, Juno, Ellen is a prolific actress and a strong activist.
A pro-choice feminist, who champions the benefits of yoga and practices a vegan lifestyle, Ellen came out as gay in 2014 during a speech of the Human Rights Campaign.
Since doing so Ellen has been a strong voice for the LGBT community and has earned my everlasting admiration by standing so firmly by her personal values. Be still my queer-beating heart.
I have to admit, Cara Delevingne was pretty much off my radar until her recent enthralling performance as Enchantress in the divisive DC hit, Suicide Squad. However, after watching her captivating performance I couldn’t help but look into her career more. A girl crush was born.
A model-turned-actress, Cara was diagnosed with depression at just 15 years old and has since opened up about her experiences multiple times, providing a mainstream voice for the still frequently misunderstood mental illness.
Cara has also been praised for her authenticity by Stella McCartney. “The thing about Cara is that she’s more than just a model—she stands for something in her generation’s eyes”. Amen to that.
I feel like this girl crush hardly needs any elaboration.
The height of androgyny, Tilda Swinton is a timeless beauty and a near-flawless actress, earning multiple prestigious awards over the course of her acting career. Her contributions to the British film industry are literally award-winning.
Perhaps one of the most prominent mainstream representations of gender fluid fashion choices, Tilda is ever-confident in her appearance. “I just follow my nose. It’s as simple as that,” she says.
You keep on doing what you do Tilda.
When is Jennifer Lawrence not a valid girl crush?
Cast as the protagonist in the teen hit, The Hunger Games, and regularly rocking it as Mystique in the X Men series, Jennifer has spoken out on multiple social issues: including body image, feminism, same-sex marriage, and poverty and world hunger.
She’s also absolutely adorkable in the best way imaginable.
In 2014 Jennifer’s nudes got leaked on the net and she handled the situation with the utmost grace, rightly labeling the act as a sex crime.
Oh and she’s also got her own foundation which supports charities such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the Special Olympics (in addition to giving $2 million to the Kosair Children’s Hospital this year to help set up a cardiac intensive care unit).
Ultimate girl crush status achieved.
And, finally, one for the adult industry.
When Mia Khalifa decided to pursue a career in the pornographic industry back in 2014 she soon became the most searched-for star on Pornhub. Why? Put simply Mia was brave enough to challenge conventions by wearing a hijab during her shoots.
The source of fierce controversy because of this move Mia has consistently possessed a fierce hold of her own agency and owned her decisions.
Through her actions Mia has also been able to expose and comment upon the state of women’s rights in modern Lebanon:
“Women’s rights in Lebanon are a long way from being taken seriously if a Lebanese-American porn star that no longer resides there can cause such an uproar.”
And that marks the end of my seven starlets of choice for ultimate girl crush. Do you agree with my list? Who are you crushing on right now?
